Stress is a silent killer. We've all heard the importance of reducing stress to lessen the risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke, but what is it exactly that makes it so deadly?
Our bodies have a stress response in order to give us an extra boost when we are scared or are rushing to complete a task. Various hormones throughout the body spring into action, giving the body what it needs to address short-term stressors.
While a little stress now and again is fine, experiencing stress for long periods of times continues to tax the body's stress response. Over time, the elevated levels of hormones wreak havoc on the digestive system, immune system and nervous system.
